On October 24, 1995, The Smashing Pumpkins dropped a record that would come to define not just an era but an entire generation of alternative rock: the sprawling double album Mellon Collie And The Infinite Sadness. Now, three decades later, The Smashing Pumpkins are celebrating the milestone with a lavish reissue, a rare trove of unreleased live recordings, and a string of suitably over-the-top collaborations.
On November 21, UMe will release expanded editions of the album, including:
- A four-disc deluxe CD and 4CD SHM-CD with new liner notes by Billy Corgan
- A limited six-LP vinyl box set, featuring remastered audio, the Infinite Sadness Tour '96 recordings, a hardbound book, custom tarot card deck, seven lithographs, and a velvet slipcase with cloth carrying bag
For fans, the biggest prize is eighty minutes of previously unheard live material from the original lineup's 1996 tour. Pre-save now and hear the newly unearthed "Geek U.S.A." here.
Corgan reflected on the bittersweet process of revisiting that era: "Unearthing these live recordings from the original lineup's true, last large-scale tour was a labour of love, and for me certainly a bittersweet as once we blew apart in 1996, we were never quite the same: be it emotionally, or spiritually. Thankfully, I can say this as the band is now enjoying our greatest public success since that time, and one can hear in these tapes the raw power that such nascent faith afforded us, then, and the will and wisdom to persevere that followed."
The Mellon Collie anniversary won't just live on vinyl. From November 21–30, Corgan will partner with the Lyric Opera of Chicago for A Night Of Mellon Collie And Infinite Sadness. The seven performances will reimagine the album through newly commissioned orchestrations by Corgan and conductor James Lowe, performed with a full opera cast and designs by House Of Gilles (Gilles Mendel and Chloé Mendel Corgan).
Meanwhile, Chicago chocolatier Vosges Haut-Chocolat has teamed with Corgan for The Mellon Collie Sessions — a limited-edition chocolate box set available from October 21. Each box includes a poster and six bars inspired by the album's hits:
