Well, here’s a use for the wireless cassette player Maxell announced recently. Hours after The Strokes announced a new album titled Reality Awaits on Monday, April 6th, one of their fans revealed they received a cassette from the band in the mail containing a new song called “Going Shopping.”
In addition to sharing photos of the special package they received in exchange for signing up for The Strokes’ SMS marketing list, the fan also posted a rip of “Going Shopping,” which you can hear below.
A laidback track somewhat reminiscent of The Strokes’ Angles era, “Going Shopping” features Julian Casablancas’ vocals drenched in Auto-Tune as he criticizes late-stage capitalism. “Solidarity can be difficult/ When you got cool stuff to lose,” he sings. “We’ve been expanding on our greatness/ Building future ruins.”
The Strokes debuted “Going Shopping” during an underplay show at San Francisco’s Bill Graham Civic Auditorium on Monday evening. “I guess why not, right?” Casablancas said while introducing the song. “It’s already out there.” Watch fan-shot footage below.
Expect to hear the track and other new material during The Strokes’ upcoming festival sets at Coachella, Bonnaroo, Outside Lands, Shaky Knees, and more. Passes can be purchased here.
