Turner Classic Movies Counterprograms Gaslight Opposite Trump’s State of the Union Address

There’s never any shortage of things to watch these days. But should you have a cable subscription and no interest in watching the annual State of the Union address at 9:00 p.m. ET, there’s one intriguing option: At 8:00 p.m. ET, Turner Classic Movies (TCM) is airing Gaslight, the 1944 film about a woman being slowly driven mad by the manipulations of her husband.

Gaslight, starring Charles Boyer, Ingrid Bergman, and a very young Angela Lansbury, is considered the inspiration for the term “gaslighting,” which refers to manipulating a person into questioning their perception of reality. The concept of “gaslighting” gets invoked frequently these days when discussing the current Presidential administration, as seen with the recent Atlantic piece “Trump Is Gaslighting Us.”

TCM has made no public statement about its airing of Gaslight this evening. The movie is also available on VOD via Apple and Amazon.
