Daoud Tyler-Ameen is known as a former member of Bad Moves, the beloved DC power-pop band who played their last hurrah of farewell shows last year. Bad Moves are missed, but Tyler-Ameen has also had another project up his sleeve called Art Sorority that's been going strong for years and absolutely scratches the Bad Moves itch. Today Art Sorority is releasing a pair of singles, "Glory" and "Crystal Coke," which Tyler-Ameen is referring to together as Critical Distance.
And now for another fun name drop: Both songs were arranged and produced by Snow Ellet, the Chicago musician known for making ridiculously catchy emo-pop. Tyler-Ameen, like many of us, had been a fan for years and decided to reach out about making the newest Art Sorority release together. Of the songs themselves, Tyler-Ameen adds:
Critical Distance is a pair of songs about pairs of people in impossible situations. “Glory” imagines a fumbling reunion of old acquaintances, and the spark of a potential meet-cute curdling into disenchantment and disdain. “Crystal Coke” is a portrait of a doomed scene couple, eagerly shipped by their community but together for the wrong reasons, in ways that steadily get harder to ignore.
"Glory" and "Crystal Coke" are both sounding exactly like what I'd hope an ex-Bad Moves and Snow Ellet team-up would sound like. Check the songs out for yourself below.
Critical Distance is out now.
