"I was the guy behind the scenes": Miley Cyrus collaborator Stephan Moccio announces new album, Scenes From A Velvet Room

The record draws on Moccio’s memories of a formative gig playing piano six nights a week in the lobby of the Four Seasons hotel in Toronto, a period just before his career as a songwriter for artists including Celine Dion, Miley Cyrus, and the Weeknd took off. He even composed the theme song for the 2010 Winter Olympics.

“I was the guy who was always behind the scenes,” he says.

The LP features three tracks with New Orleans saxophonist Branford Marsalis, who switches between soprano and tenor. Marsalis appears on “Like An Old Photograph”, “The Beautiful Undoing” and “Opaline”. The album closes with “I Break Everything I Love”, a piece on which Moccio finally plays on piano a melody that Marsalis had hinted at earlier across the record.

Moccio’s previous LP, Legends, Myths, and Lavender, was released in 2024.
