Impex Returns to Gutting Audio with ‘Bad Boys’ EP

Portuguese DJ and producer Impex is a prominent figure in the neurofunk world. The former metal and hardcore band member is known for high-energy, intricate drum patterns and subversive motifs. Having released on major labels worldwide, he’s returning to Gutting Audio to present Bad Boys, an EP that truly dances on the dark side. Grinding basslines, restrained synths, and sinister vibes encapsulate this three-track EP, expanding the sound for which Impex is known.

From the beginning, Marcos Rendeiro — or Impex, as he’s known — brings in heavy bassline distortion. “Don’t Stay Safe” is a mechanical and industrial offering with a glitchy soundscape. Upping the ante is “Bad Boys,” a high-octane collaboration with fellow Portuguese producer and Gutting Audio collaborator Vandermou, featuring relentless precision, controlled pressure, and heavy drops. “Split Lip” rounds out the EP, fusing steppy rhythms, chopped amen breaks, and chaotic beats with a mid-song techno beat switch.

In three short tracks, Impex is able to deliver incredible power and such full-on intensity with these dancefloor annihilators. The EP is heavy, bass laden, precise in its technical production. It uniquely reflects his past metal band venture. Impex’s production range is on full display, and while he keeps the tracks within the neurofunk genre, he takes Bad Boys through the aggressive ranks of darkstep and beyond. It consists of grinding sawtooth synths, dark and sinister neurofunk, and churning basslines, all uncompromising Impex.
