The recently released Resident Evil Requiem has overtaken Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 as the best user-reviewed game on aggregate site Metacritic.
Requiem is the ninth mainline Resident Evil game and sees players split their time between survival horror and action with twin protagonists Grace Ashcroft and Leon Kennedy. It launched last week (February 27) to critical acclaim, becoming the best reviewed game of 2026 so far according to aggregate site Metacritic.
And now gamers have had their say. Based on 2,343 reviews from players, Resident Evil Requiem has an average score of 9.5 out of ten which makes it the best user-reviewed game of all time. Its closest competition Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 has a score of 9.3 after it topped the table earlier this year.

In a four star review, NME wrote: “Make no mistake, Requiem is a fantastic game that’s well worth your time. Like so many Resident Evil titles before it, the fun proliferates on repeated playthroughs: ticking off fiendish gameplay challenges (such as completing the game in under four hours) earns credits to spend on classic weapons like ‘The Matilda’, while ‘Insanity’ difficulty unlocks after your first successful go round. It just suffers, very slightly, in the shadow of some of the greatest games ever made.”
Ahead of launch, Resident Evil Requiem developers Capcom asked fans to avoid posting spoilers so everyone could “enjoy the story and experience as much as possible.” Resident Evil 2 director Hideki Kamiya was less polite about it though. “For your own selfish satisfaction, you’re trampling all over the feelings of users who were looking forward to it, and the feelings of the creators who poured their all into making it – a detestable act that destroys everyone’s happiness and deserves a thousand deaths,” he wrote on X. “May you be cursed to never play games again.”
