Last month, the St. Louis artist Slayyter, who our own Chris DeVille once described as "normcore hyperpop," released her album Wor$t Girl In America. I played it once or twice, liked it, and then found myself coming back to it again and again. It's a frenzied, over-the-top take on mall-pop, like what might've happened if Justice produced Kesha's "Tik Tok." (I realize that this reads like I'm describing Uffie, but I am not describing Uffie. Slayyyter and Uffie sound absolutely nothing alike.)
Since its release, Wor$t Girl In America has made a ton of noise, both critically and otherwise. At this point, I'm ready to call it one of the best albums of the year thus far. Last weekend, Slayyyter had one of those early-afternoon side-stage Coachella sets where the tent overflows with people and everyone goes nuts. She's about to run that Coachella back again, and all the dates on her upcoming North American tour are sold out, as are most of the European ones. Now, Slayyyter has followed the album with a loose track called "Broke Bitch Free$tyle," which has existed in some form since Slayyyter played it in her Boiler Room set in 2024.
"Broke Bitch Free$tyle" is pure bonus-track material, and it very much fits within the world of Wor$t Girl In America. I don't think it's as good as most of the songs on the LP, but I'm just happy to get more music that sounds like that. Slayyyter co-wrote the track with producers Owen Jackson and marvy ayy, and their beat is a frag grenade of a blown-out club thumper, with Slayyyter quasi-rapping about being trashy on a superhero level: "Tweaker ho shit, got my man screamin' at the bar!" Check it out below.
Wor$t Girl In America is out now on RECORDS/Columbia.
