Sophia Yau-Weeks turns inward on forthcoming debut Misty Mountain

"As someone who consistently ruminates and spirals, with an internal world marked by intrusive thoughts and the noise of uncertainty, I wanted to write about the experience of having anxiety while in relationship with someone grounding and present," Yau-Weeks explains. "The track follows my journey as I am guided away from a metaphorical misty mountain, if only for a brief moment in time."

The accompanying music video oscillates between childhood memories and recent nature footage and Yau-Weeks describes it as "a letter to my younger self", adding: "I have struggled with mental health conditions since I was a young girl, and reflecting on the past through art reminds me that I am multifaceted, resilient, and ever-changing."

Misty Mountain was recorded to tape at Tiny Telephone Oakland with co-producer Maryam Qudus (Alanis Morissette, SASAMI, SPELLLING). The decision to record analogue was deliberate, Yau-Weeks notes – "an act of unlearning and relearning".

"The limitations of tape forced us to trust our intuition when making musical choices and also welcome the singularity of each take," she says. "I think the record reflects a growing confidence in my musicality."

Much of the material was written while Yau-Weeks was living in London between 2020 and 2022, juggling nannying shifts with evening performances at places such as the George Tavern, and The Windmill in Brixton. A period of isolation following a Covid infection that left her immunocompromised also shaped the album's melancholic tone.
