Sprints – “Trickle Down”

Look, don't be alarmed. The combination of the words "Sprints" and "Trickle Down" might immediately conjure some kind of bathroom-emergency situation, perhaps a memory of doing the pee-pee dance in the driver's seat while desperately attempting to find a parking space before something goes terribly wrong. Don't worry. That's not what's happening here. It's just a righteous post-punk song about an economic philosophy that's been fucking all of us over for our entire lives. No need to worry.

Dublin's extremely cool Sprints were a Stereogum Band To Watch in 2023. Last year, they released their sophomore album All That Is Over, and the followed it with some stray tracks and a Le Tigre cover. Now, they've got a new standalone single called "Trickle Down," and it's a good one. Bandleader Karla Chubb starts the song asking, "Has anyone tried to explain trickle down economics to you in a bar?" After that, we get three minutes of fired-up riffs and rants, and all of it hits hard.

Choice lyric: "Sorry, I had to vent a little frustration/ I mean, have you seen the state of our government situation?/ Did we all decide to succumb to Americanization?/ I'm just gonna join the list of endless hospital patients?" In a press release, the band says, "'Trickle Down' is about watching systems fail in slow motion, housing crisis, rising costs, culture wars, climate collapse, and being told to stay patient.
