The new Sturgill Simpson rap track just dropped. Well, it would be new if this was the mid ‘90s.
A grainy, VHS recording surfaced on X Tuesday April 7th of the musician now known as Johnny Blue Skies spitting some bars when he was a teenager. His subject matter matches his age with him ad-libbing about going to prom and kicking it with his crew.
“I’m gonna tell you a little something ’bout prom/ That’s the night they got it going on,” he raps while two other teens beatbox and clap. “Talking that rap, splitting my rhymes/ In your face cause you know I got space/ Don’t you catch no beef or I’ll kick you in the teeth.”
Simpson’s flow and the beat are straight up not bad, bordering on good and inline with what he would have grown up hearing in the ‘80s.
The video proves once again, Simpson is not a musician who can be put in box.
Simpson is heading off on his 2026 North American tour under his pseudonym Johnny Blue Skies, performing with his band, The Dark Clouds. The September and October tour is in support of Mutiny After Midnight, the latest album under Simpson’s moniker.
A Live Nation pre-sale for select dates has already started. Fans can sign up for Live Nation’s free All Access membership to receive access. The general on-sale is set for Friday, April 10th at 10:00 a.m. local time via Ticketmaster and AXS.
The 29-date “Mutiny for the Masses Tour” kicks off in Austin on September 4th and will stop in major cities including Los Angeles, Vancouver, Chicago, Nashville, New York, and many more. See the full schedule below.
