Later this month, power-pop all-star team the New Pornographers will bounce back from a weird, upsetting episode with the release of their new album The Former Site Of. We've already posted their songs "Votive" and "Pure Sticker Shock," and now they've shared another one called "Spooky Action."
How spooky could a New Pornographers song possibly be? Not that spooky, right? Well, "Spooky Action" is pretty far from anything that I'd call "spooky." It is fairly tense and low-key, though, at least compared to most of what this band does. ("The Laws Have Changed" came up on a playlist when I was driving recently, and hoo baby, the world was fun again for a few minutes.)
"Spooky Action" is a skeletal psych-rock groove that builds toward one of the New Pornos' melodic explosions. According to a press release, it's about the Cassini-Huygens satellite, which orbited Saturn for years before crashing itself into the planet's surface. Listen below.
The Former Site Of is out 3/27 on Merge.
