The Texas singer-songwriter's sixth LP features collaborations with Willie Nelson, Miranda Lambert and Billy Strings and marks Musgraves' first full-length release since 2024's Deeper Well.
Middle of Nowhere takes its title and conceptual framework from a road sign in Musgraves' hometown of Golden, Texas – an unincorporated community with a population under 300. The sign, which reads “Golden, TX: Somewhere in the Middle of Nowhere”, provided what Musgraves has described as a symbolic throughline for the album.
Produced by Musgraves alongside longtime collaborators Daniel Tashian and Ian Fitchuk –who worked with her on 2018's Golden Hour – it was written during a period following a breakup. “The bulk of this record was made during the longest single period of my life,” Musgraves says. “I found that for the first time, it actually felt incredible being alone and existing in a space not defined by anyone else. I became fascinated with the concept of liminal space, both geographical and emotional.”
The album features an extensive cast of guests with Texas connections: Willie Nelson appears on “Uncertain, Texas”, Miranda Lambert joins for “Horses and Divorces”, Billy Strings contributes to “Everybody Wants To Be a Cowboy”, and Gregory Alan Isakov features on “Coyote”.
