Any time we don’t hear from Sacha Baron Cohen for a while, we should just assume he’s up to something involving concealed cameras and outlandish characters. According to Variety, the British comedian has revived the character of Ali G — featured in the series Da Ali G Show and the 2002 film Ali G Indahouse — for a new movie shot in secret.

In 2023 (during the writers/actors strikes), it was reported that Cohen was planning to revive the character for a standup tour — it appears that the tour did not happen, but it perhaps evolved into this project. Cohen previously used a similar format for the two Borat movies, which featured his Kazakhstanian journalist character confronting the likes of real life politicians and Pamela Anderson.

Cohen, in case you forgot, is a three-time Oscar nominee — not only were the scripts for both Borat and Borat Subsequent Moviefilm nominated for Best Adapted Screenplay, but his turn as Abbie Hoffman in Aaron Sorkin’s The Trial of the Chicago Seven was also put up for Supporting Actor. (He lost to Daniel Kaluuya from Judas and the Black Messiah.) Also, he recently appeared in the Netflix original rom-com Ladies First, which was pretty nuts.
